Allis Elementary School

Our mission is to assure that every student has the knowledge and skills needed for academic achievement and a successful life. —taken from the MMSD mission

Welcome to Frank Allis Elementary School!

Serving the district for 92 years, Frank Allis is committed to developing and sustaining a school environment which encourages individuality and responsibility, celebrates diversity, fosters a desire to learn, and supports every community member to discover and strengthen their skills, talents, and abilities so that each is prepared to be a productive participant in our changing global society.

The diverse staff at Frank Allis is dedicated to meeting the needs of the whole child. Academic skills are taught using a variety of learning modalities. Literacy instruction is a minimum of 90 minutes a day and Math instruction occurs a minimum of 60 minutes a day. Science and Social Studies instruction occurs throughout the week for 2 - 3 hours.

Parents and families are an important part of our school community. It is through a pro-active partnership between families and school that students succeed. Parents have opportunities to be involved through supporting their child's learning at home, coming to school for evening events, volunteering in the school, and accessing their child's teachers via email, telephone, or face-to-face conferences.

At Frank Allis Elementary School the success of every child matters!

Site Characteristics

Location

Frank Allis is located on the far East side of Madison. The property offers many environmental activities to students due to its large green areas, natural oak opening, a restored prairie with over 50 prairie plants, and two school gardens. Of note is the school's proximity to Olbrich Botanical Gardens and Lake Monona.
Frank Allis Elementary School and Nuestro Mundo Charter School share the same building, creating a wonderfully diverse school community. The two schools operate jointly for some activities and separately for others, creating a wonderful mix of opportunities for two schools within one building.

Class Size

Our kindergarten through grade 3 classes average 15 students. The SAGE (Student Achievement Guarantee in Education) grant from the State keeps kindergarten through third grade classes at 15 or fewer students. Grades 4-5 average 25. Our current enrollment is 380 students.

Neighborhood Bus Service

Transportation to school is contracted through the Kobussen Transportation Company. Our school is also located close to several Madison Metro Bus Company stops. Our school office keeps accurate records on transportation plans for each child to assure student safety.

Hot Lunch Program and After School Care

Students have the option of purchasing a pre-packed hot lunch through the Food Service of the Madison Metropolitan School District. The menu is provided monthly with the option of buying hot lunch or bringing a meal from home. The Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) Safe Haven program currently has an after school program consisting of activities and clubs that both reinforce and enrich student learning in a safe environment

Academic Programming

Achievement Scores

Over the past three years, Allis Elementary School test scores have shown an upward trend. In 2003-04, 79% of our third grade students scored Advanced or Proficient on the Wisconsin Reading Comprehension Test. 80% of our fourth graders scored Advanced or Proficient on the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Examination. Our students continue to improve in all categories.

Technology

Technology is an integral part of education at Frank Allis Elementary. All classrooms are computer equipped and 100% of the classrooms have two computers used daily by students and teachers. In addition, all students spend a minimum of 30 minutes on the computers in our computer lab.

Talented and Gifted (TAG) Program

Student learning experiences include a broad range of opportunities that pushes students to their next level of challenge and allows them to develop their talents. TAG programming may occur in the classroom, or in other settings. TAG programming is determined by ongoing evaluation and assessment of individual student needs. Each school has TAG resource support for ongoing consultation.

Special Classes

Our students receive instruction in the following special classes each week throughout the year: art: 1 hour per week, music: 2 hours per week, physical education, 1 1/2 hours per week, REACH (Reinforcing and Enriching Achievement for All Children) technology and LMC: 1 hour per week.

Other Programs

Frank Allis offers a full day of instruction for students, kindergarten through fifth grade. Instructional support is provided to students needing additional support in reading or math through our instructional team design. In addition, staff trained in Reading Recovery, Special Education and supports for English Language Learners services provide support to teachers and students. In addition, support services are provided by a school social worker, school psychologist, nurse, speech and language clinicians, Occupational Therapist, and Physical Therapist. Allis has a Safe Have After School program and several evening programs throughout the year, allowing the school to be open to students and families after school for a variety of programs and opportunities.

Our students receive instruction in the following special classes each week throughout the year: art, music, physical education, technology, hands-on math, and LMC instruction and support.

Physical Education instruction occurs throughout the week in three 30 minute classes and emphasizes the development of specific physical skills in an environment that promotes a balance of non-competitive activities and competition that promotes positive participation and sportsmanship. Instruction in the Fine Arts includes music classes two times a week for 30 minutes each class period and Art Class for one hour each week.

The emphasis of instruction is on exposure to the various genres, forms, history, and culture. Performance and exhibition is a strong aspect of our Fine Arts program. Students receive instruction in computers, exposure to various programs, and practice with applications that promote learning on a weekly basis. Students have access to the Library Media Center (LMC) on a weekly basis for book check out, research, and other activities that support learning.

School Climate

Safety Is Always A Priority

The social and emotional needs of our learners are met through practicing the philosophy of restitution, teaching students school behavior and expectations through "Cool Tools", allowing students to complete Fix-it Plans for misbehavior, and practicing the philosophy that "Every Day Is A New Day". At Frank Allis, our motto is: I am A Learner: I am Respectful, I am Responsible, I am Safe, I am Kind.

Frank Allis School teaches students to be "Above The Line" by making choices that are respectful, responsible, safe, and kind. When behavior may dip "below the line", students are given opportunities to "fix it" and start over.

Parents are always involved in behavioral plans as part of our process of supporting the whole child in all situations.

Partnerships

Family Partnerships

Frank Allis will begin this year having redefined our PTO organization. In the past, the PTO's work has assisted our school in educational funding, capital improvements and purchasing new playground equipment.

Community Partnerships

Our school benefits from donated materials, financial support, and time from many organizations, including JFF (Joining Forces for Families) and our partnership with WPS. Volunteers with the VISTA program assist in several ways, ranging from helping kindergarten students in the computer lab to tutoring students individually or in small groups. These volunteers make a big difference!

Several organizations also provide mentors for Allis students. With the assistance of Wisconsin Physicians Service and countless parents, we provide students with a variety of role models and learning opportunities.

University Partnerships

Frank Allis is a Professional Development School, collaborating for many years with the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Education, UW-Whitewater School of Education and Edgewood College. We promote and provide many opportunities for future teachers and ongoing learning for our professional staff.
