Huegel Elementary School

Madison's only "school in the round" has been known as an innovative school since its opening in 1966. Strong teaching teams in grades K-5 share a philosophy that all children can learn and are included in all school activities and classrooms. An active parent organization supports many school activities and promotes multicultural experiences. An outdoor learning center and school prairie are part of our environment.

Site Characteristics

Location

Ray W. Huegel Elementary School is located on the far southwest side of Madison in the Meadowridge area. Huegel has an enrollment of over 430 students in kindergarten through grade 5.

Class Size

Huegel is a SAGE school with class size at 15:1 in grades K-3 and 23:1 at 4/5.

Neighborhood Bus Service

Transportation is provided for children living at least 1.5 miles from Huegel.

Breakfast/Hot Lunch Program and After School Care

A breakfast and hot lunch program is available for all students. Students may choose to bring a cold lunch and purchase milk. The Madison YMCA provides before and after school day care for interested parents.

Academic Programming

Achievement Scores

Huegel students have consistently scored at or above the state and national standards on the Terra Nova, the fourth grade Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam (WKCE), and the Wisconsin Third Grade Reading Test.

Technology

Computers are used to support and extend learning throughout the curriculum. We have a fully equipped computer lab for the children. Computers are also available in our Library Media Center (LMC).

Special Classes

Teacher specialists in art, music and physical education provide regular instruction. REACH (Reinforcing and Enriching Achievement for All CHildren) extends and supports classroom curriculum. Huegel's Parent, Teacher and Children Association (PTCA) has also sponsored after school enrichment classes in foreign language, crafts, fine arts and movement.

Differentiated Instruction

Student learning experiences include a broad range of opportunities that push a student to their next level of challenge and allows them to develop their talents. Differentiated programming may occur in the classroom, or in other settings. Programming is determined by ongoing evaluation and assessment of individual student needs.

Other Programs

Huegel is school-wide Title I school with multiple resources designed to support student learning. Extra curricular programming done after school ranges from a Robotics Club to homework support.

School Climate

Safety Is Always A Priority

Playgrounds have adult supervision 15 minutes before school and during recess. Each year, we train 50-55 school safety patrols who promote safety rules in our school and help children cross at our nearby street crossings. We have implemented a "Peaceful Playground" program.

Special Programs

All children in grades K-5 have the opportunity to participate in our spring fine arts and choral programs. In addition to musicals performed at grades 1-2, 3 and 4-5, grade 4-5 students may elect to participate in strings.

Partnerships

Family Partnerships

Huegel's very active PTO meets on the first Tuesday of each month. Activities include topics of interest, fundraising, multicultural programming, family activities and many special events throughout each year.

Foundation for Madison's Public Schools

Huegel School has established an individual school endowment through the Foundation for Madison's Public Schools. Funds are used to bring new and innovative programming to Huegel.
