Chávez Elementary School

César Chávez Elementary School is now in its ninth year and is currently Madison's 2nd largest elementary school with 621 students, but no matter how large we become we pledge to treat each child as an individual. The building is both beautiful and educational-friendly. The classrooms are laid out in grade level pods that enables the staff to build a sense of community among classes.

Our mission statement:

Chávez Elementary School is an academic institution dedicated to developing the intellectual and creative abilities of our students. Ours is a collaborative effort among staff, students, families and our community to guide students to become knowledgeable and contributing citizens, able to make their way in this global society. Together with kindness, gentle good humor and respect for each other, we will foster a safe learning environment of joy and acceptance.

Academic Programming

Academic Achievement

Chávez students participate in many forms of assessment during their elementary career. Testing occurs in the areas of reading, writing and math and the results are used by the teachers to guide their daily instruction. Test results also assist us in setting school improvement goals which are designed to increase student success in the areas of learning, engagement and relationships.

Technology

The integration of technology into the curriculum is an important part of the Chávez learning experience. Each classroom has five computers, one for the teacher and the others for students. In addition there is a printer in each class. All classes are hooked up to the Internet and it can be viewed over a TV that is provided for each class. There is also a computer lab, where all students receive weekly instruction, and there are 12 computers for student use in the LMC. In all areas we are striving to use technology to advance the educational process.

REACH

Technology/Computers is our REACH (Reinforcing and Enriching Achievement for all Children) program and on each week out students in 2nd-5th grades work in the computer lab on a variety of computer-related skills. Students in Kindergarten and 1st grade split their hour of REACH, with a 1/2 hour in the computer lab and the other 1/2 hour in the library discovering the joys of literacy and books. Literacy in all disciplines is a priority for our school.

Special Classes/Opportunities

Teacher specialists in art, music and physical education provide regular instruction. Fifth grade students also have the opportunity to participate in the strings program.

Talented and Gifted (TAG) Program

The goal of Talented and Gifted (TAG) programming is to make certain K-12 students consistently have learning opportunities that are challenging, systematic and continuous based on learning profile, readiness and student interest.

Student learning experiences include a broad range of opportunities that pushes a student to their next level of challenge and allows them to develop their talents. TAG programming may occur in the classroom, or in other settings. TAG programming is determined by ongoing evaluation and assessment of individual student needs. Each school has TAG resource support for ongoing consultation.

Other Programs

Chávez offers full day kindergarten, Rock and Read, Reading Recovery, Special Education services, and English as a Second Language (ESL) programming. Support services are provided by the occupational/physical therapists, psychologist, nurse, social worker, speech/language clinician and instructional resource teacher.

School Climate

Safety Is Always A Priority

Chávez aims to be a positive place where students, staff, and parents feel good about the school and where important learning occurs. We have a school-wide behavior plan based on the work of Corwin Kronenberg model called “Above the Line” Behaviors. This model refers to student behaviors that contribute to a sense of community. The District-wide code of conduct is followed consistently and fairly.

Peaceful Problem Solving and Conflict Resolution

Chávez aims to be a positive place where students, staff, and parents feel good about the school and where important learning occurs. We will continue with the "Stop and Think" social skills program and start working on a school-wide positive behavior plan based on the work of Carwin Kronenberg model called "Above the Line" Behaviors. This model refers to student behaviors that contribute to a sense of community.

Partnerships

Family Partnerships

Our PTO is a vibrant group of parents. The PTO works to provide a link between home, school and the district.  It supports academic programming by planning special events, fundraisers advocating for our children and soliciting volunteers. The PTO meets the third Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the LMC. If you need transportation, it will be arranged. Call the secretary at 442-2001.

Special Programs

Special reading programs at Chávez include the Vista Schools of Hope volunteers and Reading Buddies. Other programs include Book Bowl, Concerts, and safety patrol. The PTO sponsors a wide variety of cultural arts programs throughout the school year.

Foundation for Madison Public Schools: Chávez has established an individual school endowment through the Foundation for Madison's Public Schools. Recently, Chávez staff members applied for and received grant money to fund a Hip Hop Artist In Residency and a graffiti artist to work with the students.
