Shorewood Hills Elementary School is a unique learning community with strong traditions. Our students and their families come from around the world, the United States, and the Village of Shorewood Hills. Students, families and school staff value education and are dedicated to continuing a tradition of high academic achievement for all children.
The central purpose fo the school community is to nurture youth who will love learning throughout their lives, have a diverse, global perspective, and respect for each others' differences through understanding and appreciating our common humanity. Partnering together, school staff and parents will work to ensure that all students have the cultural, social, artistic, technological and academic knowledge, skills and experiences to continue learning and function as world citizens.
We will achieve this partnership and sustain our traditions through intentional efforts to:
- work together from a basis of mutual trust and respect;
- draw upon our school's diversity to make the world less theoretical and more experiential;
- provide a culturally rich, stimulating, engaging, and rigorous curriculum;
- build and sustain positive relationships with and among all students;
- develop a safe, supportive culture in which everyone feels included.
Shorewood Hills Elementary School is located on the near west side of Madison among the rolling hills and wooded residential area of the Village of Shorewood Hills nestled between the University of Wisconsin to the east, Lake Mendota to the north and University Avenue to the south.
The SAGE (Student Achievement Guarantee in Education) grant from the State will keep kindergarten and first grade classes at 15 or fewer students. Second grade averages 22 students; third, fourth and fifth grades average 24 students. Our total enrollment is 500 students.
We Are A Neighborhood School
Students who attend Shorewood Hills are in the fortunate position to attend a true neighborhood school. Our students walk from the village of Shorewood Hills, and from the University of Wisconsin's student housing facilities - University Houses and Eagle Heights.
Hot Lunch Program and After School Care
Shorewood School offers the hot lunch program that is available to all Madison public school students. After school day care is available on-site until 6 p.m. through Wisconsin Youth Company, Inc.
Achievement scores in all academic areas consistently exceed district, state and national averages -- more often than not topping out in the high 90th percentiles.
Computers are utilized as a tool for both students and teachers, as well as for curriculum support. All classrooms have IBM compatible computers that have Internet and district access. In addition to the classroom computers, we have a fully functional lab, staffed by experienced teachers and computer enthusiasts. Students receive technology instruction for one hour each week in a developmentally appropriate progression of learning. Advanced technology students update our web site and work on our student newspaper.
Talented and Gifted (TAG) Program
The goal of Talented and Gifted (TAG) programming is to make certain K-12 students consistently have learning opportunities that are challenging, systematic and continuous based on learning profile, readiness and student interest.
Student learning experiences include a broad range of opportunities that pushes a student to their next level of challenge and allows them to develop their talents. TAG programming may occur in the classroom, or in other settings. TAG programming is determined by ongoing evaluation and assessment of individual student needs. Each school has TAG resource support for ongoing consultation.
Art, music, physical education and computer technology are part of every student's curriculum. Strings instruction is available for fourth and fifth grade students as well as an honors choir for vocally gifted fourth and fifth graders. Other programs include support services by a psychologist, social worker and speech and language clinician. Shorewood has an outstanding English as a Second Language program and full-day kindergarten.
Our biggest event of the year is a week long celebration called "International Week" that highlights the customs and costumes of the world and culminates with a Saturday festival featuring food, music, and dancing.
On alternating years we also have parent and volunteer driven Science and Art Expos, that are second to none.
Safety Is Always A Priority
Our three playgrounds have adult supervision 15 minutes before school and during all recess breaks. Nursing assistance is available and students and their families tell us that they feel great about their kids coming to our school!
Input from parents is key at Shorewood. The PTO executive board is part of our School Improvement Team. The principal meets regularly with the PTO executive board, made up of members who reside in University Houses, Eagle Heights and the Village of Shorewood. This group supports academic programming by planning special events and fundraisers, as well as advocating for our children and soliciting volunteers.
