Philosophy - Olson is a diverse and caring community whose mission is to provide a high quality education in order to encourage students to become lifelong learners. We seek to develop a positive, caring school environment in which all students, parents and staff feel a strong connection to.
Achievement Test Scores - Given that this is our first academic year, we will not have access to standardized testing results until late spring 2009.
Honors Courses and Core Academic Subjects - The goal of the Talented and Gifted (TAG) programming is to ensure K-12 students consistently have learning opportunities that are challenging, systematic and continuous based on learning profiles, readiness, and student interest. Student learning experiences include a broad range of opportunities that take students to their next level or challenge and allows them to develop their talents. TAG programming most frequently occurs in the classroom. TAG programming is determined by ongoing evaluation and assessment of individual student need. Each school in the district has TAG resource support for ongoing consultation.
Technology - Given that Olson is the newest elementary school in the district, there is a great deal of technology that is incorporated into our instruction. Students have weekly computer instruction (REACH) within our computer lab. Computers are also located in each classroom along with flat-screen monitors and document cameras. In addition, we have SmartBoards located in music, art, computer lab and in three of our professional development rooms.
Special Classes - Teacher specialists in art, music, LMC/computer and physical education provide regular instruction. 5th grade students also have the opportunity to participate in the strings program. Parent groups are in the process of coordinating club opportunities after school. Currently we have a Spanish language class for K-5 students that meet on Wednesdays after school.
Other Programs - Olson offers full-day kindergarten, Reading Recover, Special Education services and English as a Second Language (ESL) programming. Support services are provided by the occupational/physical therapists, psychologist, nurse, social worker, speech/language clinician and instructional resource teacher. Currently several parents are developing Art Appreciation classes that will be held during the school day. The presentations will help student gain a greater appreciation for the value of the art in our lives.
Family Partnerships - Many Olson parents and guardians volunteer to assist teachers or share their talents and interests in classrooms. In addition, the Olson PTO is instrumental in supporting numerous programs such as the Book Fair/ Ice Cream Social, Popcorn Days, Family Nights, Spring Carnival, coordinating special assemblies, etc.
To become better informed about school programs, and to influence school policy, PTO meetings are held once a month on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-7:30 p.m. The meetings often include guest speakers on special topics.
Community Partnerships - We have a partnership with the UW-Madison as part of their practicum and student teacher education preparation program.
We also recommend students each year to attend the University of Wisconsin College for Kids program.
