Read Up is a campaign to promote reading and give parents tools to help their children get more from what they are reading. A joint effort among the Madison Metropolitan School District, United Way, Madison Public Library, Madison School and Community Recreation (MSCR) and the Madison Reading Project, Read Up helps prevent “summer slide,” where students experience a loss of learning during the summer months. We invite you to browse our resources and find strategies for close reading.

Read Up in MMSD Summer School Sites

During summer 2017 Read Up reached over 1,000 kids at six elementary schools: Lapham, Mendota, Hawthorne, Chávez, Stephens and Lincoln. Due to the success of the 2017 fundraising campaign, Read Up book giveaways were also held at Nuestro Mundo and Falk reaching an additional 368 students. Read Up worked with MSCR in the afternoon portion of summer school to offer literacy-based activities and free book giveaways.

Read Up is excited to announce that in the summer 2018 the program will expand to serve all 12 MMSD elementary Summer School sites. Over 2,700 students in grades 4k-4th grade are expected to participate. All summer school elementary students will get to choose 5 free, brand new books to take home to keep in their personal libraries. With the help of Madison Reading Project, Read Up is arranging for 5th grade students to receive selected books written by local authors and then participate in presentations with the authors themselves.

Read Up Campaign

A special thank you to the 740 individuals, companies and foundations who contributed over $112,000 during the Read Up campaign in 2017.

If you would like to help Read Up get more books into the hands of kids, please consider contributing to the campaign via the Foundation for Madison's Public Schools. You can donate on their website or send a check to Read Up Madison Fund, c/o Foundation for Madison's Public Schools, 101 Nob Hill Road, Suite 300, Madison, WI 53713.

Through April 1, contributions to the campaign will be noted with a list published each Sunday in the Wisconsin State Journal. In addition to recognizing individual and corporate contributors -- in tiered groupings but without specific dollar amounts by name -- the list will include a running tally of total donations received to date. Those who do not wish to have their name published can simply request "anonymous" when making a contribution.
