MMSD Shares Update on 2024 Referenda Projects

Progress continues on work related to MMSD’s 2024 facilities referendum projects. High-level concepts have been developed to help begin the discussion on the design process, including how to best place each building within the available space. MMSD will continue working with its internal teams, students, each school’s surrounding neighborhoods and the community overall to gather information that will be helpful in determining the final designs.

“We are just at the beginning stages of envisioning what these buildings could potentially be,” says Scott Chehak, Senior Executive Director of Building Services. “Our main goal right now is to focus on Sherman and Black Hawk middle schools, Gompers Elementary School and Shabazz High School.”

These schools were selected to address first based on geographic location and the Facilities Condition Assessment, which identified critical HVAC and plumbing needs. Also considered were the mechanical systems that have reached their life expectancy. Groundbreaking is slated for February 2026.

In addition to 2024 referendum work, staff are building an enterprise asset management system so they can be proactive with ongoing maintenance throughout all of the District’s facilities. The system will include detailed information about District assets, such as plumbing, electrical systems, and roofs. Staff will be able to electronically keep track of each asset’s condition and expected lifestyle, which can benefit the budgeting process through more focused planning. As far as unexpected items that may occur, a portion of funds will be set aside to help be prepared.

“MMSD recently passed a historic referendum, and we are excited this work is moving forward,” said Superintendent Dr. Joe Gothard. “However, we also have 65 facilities throughout the district that need regular upkeep and maintenance. We need to maintain what we currently have to help ensure they last as long as reasonably possible.”
