The "Eastside Players,” took home several awards at the 2024 Wisconsin Interscholastic Speech and Dramatic Arts Festival. The team’s production of playwright Tim Kelly’s one-act, Country Gothic, received the festival’s top prize, the Critic’s Choice Award.

MMSD is pleased to announce that three of its high schools—East, Vel Phillips Memorial, and West—have been recognized by the Wisconsin Advanced Placement Advisory Council with AP Pacesetter Awards for the 2023–2024 school year.
Three MMSD rising juniors were recently selected to participate in Madison-based educational nonprofit Galin Scholars’ second student cohort, joining three rising MMSD seniors entering their second year with the program as part of its inaugural class.
Jesus Cortez was an aeronautical engineer before becoming a cross categorical teacher at Sennett Middle School. Now, he teaches his students how to solve problems – on tests and in life.
Counselman teaches science at Malcolm Shabazz City High School, one of the district’s alternative schools. Through engaging project-based learning, he encourages students to make connections and build confidence, elevating school into powerful life experiences.
The certification solidifies that Memorial’s auto program meets industry standards to prepare students for the workforce after high school.
