Weekly Update to the Board of Education 1-14-2021

A message from Superintendent Carlton D. Jenkins, Ph.D.

Dear Board Members,

This week, which marks our next to last week of the 2nd Quarter, has certainly been eventful. Yesterday, our U.S. House of Representatives responded to last week's assault on our democracy in Washington, D.C. by voting in favor of impeaching President Trump for a second time. This ongoing national drama mirrors the nation’s ongoing concerns about racial injustice, inequitable treatment from law enforcement and disparities. Additionally, district leaders have been collaborating with local officials to prepare for possible ongoing protests of the impeachment vote and the upcoming inauguration of our 46th U.S. President. Therefore, district and building leadership will continue working to support the civic learning and social-emotional needs of our students, colleagues and families during this unprecedented time in our democracy.

This week, MMSD has continued to engage district stakeholders around planning for eventually returning to in-person instruction, when we can do so safely. On Tuesday night, I met with a Parent Advisory Group, who provided balanced perspectives on virtual learning, parent-teacher partnerships, addressing students' social-emotional needs, and district efforts to engage families. Their insights and suggestions will continue to be useful as we navigate the COVID-19 pandemic and prepare our instructional as well as operational plans for this summer and beyond.

Tonight, we look forward to continued engagement with our community as we hold a Facebook Live session where medical experts will get the opportunity to share their perspectives and answer questions. We look forward to this event and other opportunities for closing the gap between the considerations of our district leaders and the public's understanding.

Thanks for your continued support and partnership. We look forward to providing you with more updates on our district’s progress next week.

Carlton D. Jenkins, Ph.D.
