Weekly Update to the Board of Education 4-15-2021

A message from Superintendent Carlton D. Jenkins, Ph.D.

Dear Board Members,

This week, which marks the second week of our 4th Quarter, has certainly been eventful. On Tuesday, we continued our implementation of our phased reopening plan by welcoming our students in grades 3-5 back into our buildings for in-person instructional options. In addition, our juniors were able to take the ACT test on Tuesday, which foreshadows the planned phasing of our high school students back into our buildings later this month.

Throughout this week, our community, state, and nation has resumed having conversations about addressing a pandemic which has plagued our country much longer than COVID-19, injustice. Recent events in Atlanta, Virginia, and Minnesota have reignited protest and dialogue about the need to become proactive in addressing disparities and inequities based on the biases which form when we devalue human dignity. Our community, in particular, has the ingredients needed to strive for an elevation of human decency if we can summon the will to fully accept and value everyone regardless of their race, gender, transgender status, home language, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, immigration status, religion, or disability status.

Our community and national conversations about the COVID-19 and injustice pandemics also influence our district’s conversations about eliminating disparities and accelerating learning for all students. During Monday’s Operations Work Group meeting, district staff engaged in a rich dialogue with the board about ensuring our budgeting of resources reflects our ideals as reflected in our Strategic Framework and Core Values. Our discussion spanned topics such as the strategic investment of referendum dollars into our physical learning spaces as well as providing resources to give families greater choice in instructional options. Each of the topics discussed reflects our sincere desire to align our district’s resources with our efforts to ameliorate the gap between excellence and non-excellence.
