A message from Superintendent Carlton D. Jenkins, Ph.D.
Dear Board Members,
This week marks the second week of the interlude between our summer semester and the start of a new school year. During this week, our principals and other administrators have been engaging in a learning institute designed to enhance their capacity to eliminate disparities and accelerate learning for all students. As our district enhances our staff's knowledge base, skill sets, and tool kits, we will be better situated to address the challenges faced by public education: multiple pandemics; unprecedented staffing shortages; supply chain disruptions; racial injustice; social unrest; political partisanship; and historic inflation. Despite these challenges, our staff is preparing to nurture the infinite potential of our scholars as we build on the resilience and determination of our students and families.
As our administrators make preparations for leading our dynamic and diverse students and staff, they will find inspiration through reflection on our Strategic Framework goals. We still believe all our scholars will graduate ready for college, careers, and the community. We are still working to ensure all our schools are places where all students, staff, and families can thrive. We still believe all students can excel in our schools, particularly our Black students and youth, despite the historical and contemporary challenges they face.
As we build momentum for achieving breakthrough moments, we are encouraged by the evidence of collaboration and co-creation abiding in our community. Students are lifting their voices to help shape their academic and co-curricular experience. Families are sharing insights, hopes, and dreams for their scholars with staff. Staff are building their capacity through constructive dialogue with colleagues on emerging and promising practices. Board members are interrogating policies to assist in removing barriers to equity and excellence. Collectively, we are making the critical investments of time, attention, and resources needed to truly make an impact.
