Alida LaCosse Named Teacher of the Year by the Madison Area Music Association

Alida LaCosse, music teacher at James C. Wright Middle School, was awarded Teacher of the Year by the Madison Area Music Association (MAMA) for her outstanding commitment to music education.

In addition to teaching band, orchestra, and choir to sixth through eighth graders at Wright, LaCosse volunteers with several music-based community groups, including serving as a youth mentor at the nonprofit Girls Rock Camp Madison. She is also a sitting member of the WORT FM Board of Directors.

LaCosse shared stories about her impactful experiences teaching Wright students how to play instruments during her acceptance speech at the virtual MAMA awards ceremony.

“A lot of people don’t know what their purpose is,” LaCosse said. “But I always knew...I just knew from the time I was four or five I wanted to be a music teacher.”

LaCosse is in her fourth year at Wright, and is working to build the music program, which is growing exponentially.

“Teaching music is my dream job,” LaCosse said. “As I am a musician too, I feel so blessed to be able to be in the company of brilliant musical children every day.”
