Over the next few days, each MMSD Kindergarten student will receive a small library of their very own books to bring home. Book bundles are available for kindergartners participating in our virtual elementary program, too; teachers will share pick-up details.
Reading is the foundation all students need to succeed. Even though it may seem a long way in the future for this Class of 2034, MMSD is preparing our scholars now to graduate ready for college, careers, and community. Families are encouraged to read these books (and more!) with their young scholar, as they discover new interests and a world of ideas a great book can bring.
Of course, our community takes pride in MMSD students and schools. This generous gift of more than 15,300 books was made possible through a collaboration between the school district, the Madison Public Schools Foundation, and the Madison Reading Project, funded by memorial donations from the family and friends of Karen Christensen Ragatz.
Mrs. Ragatz was a longtime MMSD educator, teaching English as a Second Language at Thoreau Elementary, and a dedicated volunteer in our schools. She passed away in February 2021. Each student’s book bundle will include multilingual books, a nod to Mrs. Ragatz’s teaching career.
For the month of September, we also recognize National Literacy Month. This wonderful gift to our kindergarten students is a perfect way to celebrate!
