Education seems to be a profession that is often overlooked. You have to have a humble heart. You also have to have a grateful heart for your students. Co-workers and the district you work in. There are long days and trying weeks, with seasons of hope each year. Education is the cornerstone for every other profession. We support, by our actions, love and kindness, dreams that our students hold for their future.

Teaching is such an important career! Our students’ futures are in our hands. It is up to us to provide them with guidance and inspiration in order to ensure that their dreams are achievable and that they become lifelong learners. Teaching was my passion. My career was filled with much joy and love. Now my hope is that future generations of teachers find it as rewarding as I did.
Nice Work.
There is nothing more powerful than teaching a child how to read. Reading opens up the unlimited universe of knowledge. Teachers are powerful!
My advice is for the MMSD Administration. It is important that you ask the staff on the front lines who work in the schools, directly or indirectly with students, then listen to what they say. Frontline folks have a lot of excellent ideas about working with students and improving school functioning. This includes the custodians, school secretaries, SEA and NA staff, teachers, principals, and anyone else in the schools. Thank you!
Take a walk!
Teaching is truly a work of heart. Relationships matter - the foundation for every success in the classroom!
The tree in my picture was a sapling, less than a foot tall when I planted it at CHMS during my first year of teaching in MMSD, 33 years ago. It is gratifying to witness how much it has grown. As educators, we don’t always get to see the end result of our work. We have to use our judgment and forge ahead with what we know in our hearts is best. We plant the seeds and nurture, but then set our students forth to grow and branch out on their own. Correspondingly, as we are making our own impacts, we can continue to learn and grow by paying attention to our students.
Be kind to the people that you come across. You don’t know their story, and what they might be going through. Take time to listen to their stories. Your life will become richer because of it.
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." - Nelson Mandela
Thanks to all the inspirational educators and humans I have had the privilege and pleasure of learning , growing & laughing with these last 25 years!
"Love what you do and you'll never have to work a day in your life".
Dear MMSD students, families, staff, and friends,
I am incredibly thankful for my time with you!

Working with MMSD in Early Childhood for 24 years was a wonderful experience! Working with our MTI colleagues and on numerous committees I have seen first hand the commitment and caring staff come together for all our students!
I have had the opportunity to work in a variety of schools and have been under a variety of leadership styles ~ some principals have held a special place in my heart for many years, without those leaders I would not be the educator that I am! Without my SEAs supporting our students my job would have have been more difficult ~ thank you to my SEAs!!
I am proud to have had the opportunity to work in MMSD and continue to wish my fellow colleagues happiness, health and relaxation this summer! Holly Hansen (EC:EEN teacher)
Time passes quickly. Enjoy every precious moment!
A Career in Education is all about managing the day-to-day work, the emotional ups and downs, the students, the families, the successes, the tragedies, the politics of education, and our own lives. How can this work possibly be summed up in a few "words of inspiration or advice, and what can I say about my experience that could be meaningful for others? I had to think long and hard about this question, and then I realized that I had actually been sharing my 'Survival Strategy' with friends and colleagues for a very long time. I hope that my words inspire you, My Colleagues in Education, to continue this very important work of educating and preparing our children for the challenges of the future! So here goes...
A Career in Education is much like the game of CBS's Survivor in which players have to "outwit, outplay, and outlast" one another in order to make it to the end of the game. In the Game of Education, 'Outwit' means relying on your emotional intelligence, your 'alliances' (trusted colleagues) and the relationships outside those alliances for support; 'Outplay' means working with your trusted colleagues to develop strategies and 'lesson plans' to respond to the circumstances and challenging conditions of the job; and most importantly, 'Outlast' means that you have survived the difficult conditions of the job by relying on your emotional intelligence, the support of trusted colleagues, and others, to make it through a day, a week, a semester, a year, and finally, a Career.
"The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away." - Pablo Picasso
You don’t need my advice, you hold your own answers.
If you are like me, one of the reasons you became an educator is that you believe our public schools have the potential of being places where all children thrive and belong. This does not happen by accident. I believe that it takes focused work that starts with understanding our “why” for working as a public educator. For me, my mission has been and continues to be about using what is in my control and influence to build inclusive, joyful, equitable schools and communities with our children at the center. This includes being an ongoing learner and understanding that it’s a continuous process. Knowing your beliefs, building on your strengths and taking care of yourself is foundational to making a positive difference in the lives of others and yourself.
The great thing is that you do not have to do this complex work alone. Strong collaboration is a key to planning and implementing practices that are grounded in equity for all children. I have witnessed how co-planning and co-teaching among educators (General Educators, Specialists from ESL, Special Education, Reading Intervention, etc) have positively impacted children’s learning and well-being. Interestingly enough, collaboration also brings energy, fun and creativity to educators in the process. There is so much in public education that can bring us down - and so much more that can lift us up to do what is needed for our children. This includes listening to our children - I like to call them the “truth tellers”. They will tell you how to adjust and change your practices to support their learning. Our children are some of our best teachers!
MMSD has been a wonderful place for living out my equity mission while learning so much along the way. I hope that you enjoy the journey and realize that you are making a difference in both small and big ways for the children, families and colleagues with whom you work every day.
Hang in there, MMSD staff! The work you do is so important, and you are much appreciated!
It was my pleasure to teach for MMSD for 25 years. I remember how hard I tried to get my job right out of UWMadison. Time flies and I was so lucky to spend 22 years in the same classroom at Black Hawk Middle School! Hold on to that dream. It comes and goes so quickly.
There's no better feeling than saying I'm a retired MMSD teacher. I am proud to be a member of such a dedicated and inspiring group of former educators.
Thank you MMSD for the opportunities to learn and grow, both personally and professionally, to be the best educator I could be. I have loved my 27 years working for this district.
To paraphrase Maya Angelou, “People will forget what you said and did, but they will remember how you made them feel.” My advice is to build relationships with your students, let them know how much you care about them and be enthusiastic about each individual. I’m asked to go out for drinks with the now grown up children I run into from my first job for MMSD at Cesár Chavez, and I’m always a little shocked that I’m still affecting grown up’s lives ❤️
The universal love, compassion and social ethics should be a part of our school system for harmonious and peaceful families, schools and community.
Congratulations to all retirees! It has been an honor and an incredible learning experience working with all of you.
As educators, our vocation has been based in 'educare' to lead out. Teachers lead their students out from the unknowing into learning and knowing through intellectual, moral, and social instruction.
We teach so that our students can have happy and healthy lives as they work and live in their local and global communities but also to give them the foundation they need in order to make life better for all who live in the various communities in which our students live and work.
Teaching is a noble vocation which involves open-mindedness, caring, strength, persistence, and courage. We touch many lives indirectly through our students and directly through our contacts with parents, administration, politicians, and neighbors.
Teaching is creative as we encourage our students to have a growth mindset to develop each and every day into a newer, better version of themselves.
Teaching is courageous as teachers find the need to speak truth to power to protect their students, their students’ education, and their communities. And as we have lately seen in the news, it takes courage to protect our students physically from those who kill.
However, Teaching is joy and satisfaction as we watch and see the growth of our students over time. It is worth the moments of frustration that result from an inability to reach the child. Frustration is a symptom of caring. The world needs caring teachers.
Teachers who retire from the active everyday entrance into school are only changing the way in which they teach. Teaching is a vocation and stays with us always. Retirement is a stage of life in which the journey of teaching continues in different ways through our connection and interactions with people.
I am proud to be an educator of 35 years and look forward to the new journey and adventures to come.
I had two rules I’ve always followed during my teaching career.
1. Make school as positive as possible, using kindness and humor. We never know who (students or colleagues) needs the positivity. School might be the light in someone’s day.
2. No matter what happens one day, start the next school day on a positive note. It’s a new “page” in the story!
Just be kind!
Success isn't about what you accomplish in your life. It's about what you inspire other people to do.
Every single student has a family or support network who hopes that educators will provide equitable resources for their child . If this is accomplished it will help all students to achieve their best possible learning outcomes. As educators, we must never forget this.
"You can't sit around and wait for someone to say who you are. You need to write it and paint it and do it." - Faith Ringgold
The trick to a long career in teaching is surrounding yourself with good people and making space for JOY every day. It is the hardest job you will ever love. Many days fall short of our desired impact, but when we get it right, it is downright magical. To new and current educators, make sure you take care of yourself and your colleagues as you care for our families and students. Don't forget, that educators are the most powerful agent of change in our schools.
1) Be persistent
2) Dominant culture members: Go into spaces where you are the minority, keep your mouth closed and learn, its good for you.
3) Never underestimate what is possible, there is always an action you can take.
4) Listening to someone's story is a sacred trust. Treat it as a precious gift.
5) Have fun with your co-workers
KEEP GOING.
LISTEN.
SPEAK UP.
FIND THE OTHERS.
"A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in or the kind of car I drove. But the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child." - Forest Witcraft
We are all artists. We all need to be creative in one way or another in order to thrive!
Our motto in Kindergarten & K/1 has always been “Never a dull moment!” So much joy ❤️
In my twenty eight years of working in food service, I had an opportunity to move around within the department!
Before retiring from the district, due to Covid, I worked the last five years in an elementary school that I truly enjoyed!
I miss the relationships I had with students and staff.
For those of you that are still working, I hope you realize how important your job is, after all, we all play a part in building the future for each and every child! ❤️
Working in a school health office for 30 years has inspired me to continue improving the lives of children and adults by being an Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist at Primal Air in Sun Prairie.
Hang in there! The jobs don't get any easer but they are important and rewarding. We made it!
Listen and be present.
My Advice is to always remember that every single student is a unique individual with their own needs and learning styles. Every student will learn in their own way and at their own speed. It is okay to deviate from whatever the latest learning trend is to find what works best for the individual child. You are the expert and know your student best! Also remember to take care of yourself both mentally & physically!
I want to thank all fellow retirees for your service to the students. Enjoy this well deserved time to pursue your passions!
Whatever is next make sure that you:
pay your union dues
read all of the fine print
assume the benefit of the doubt
trust but verify
It takes a village and we were the village people.
You can't retire from being GREAT!
"Dare to live the life you have dreamed for yourself. Go forward, and make your dreams come true." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
Learn from the past but live for the future!
Have faith in God!
Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises; that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. And besides this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue, knowledge; and to knowledge, temperance; and to temperance, patience; and to patience, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, charity.
Second Peter 1:4-7
Thanks to all my MMSD coworkers. You’re the best!
The relationships and friendships I was lucky to form and that I continue to have with colleagues, students, and students' families .....are priceless!!
"It always seems impossible until it's done." - Nelson Mandela
You can't change the wind, but you can adjust the sails. Find joy in the little moments as well as the big ones. Be kind, do kind things for others. Take time outside in nature. Above all, treasure your family and friends!
"Every child can learn. Just not on the same day or in the same way. It's not that children don't want to learn, they are just not being taught in a way that they can learn." - George Evans
Know that you have made a difference in the lives of children and their families.
You can't start the next chapter of your life. If you keep re-reading the last one.
I was hired as a Speech-Language Pathologist in August 1993. My advice? Don’t be afraid to reach out to your colleagues when you need assistance and offer your support to others in return. It is the relationships I will remember the most. I have had the pleasure of working with some wonderful people over the years and made many lifelong friends. When I first arrived, I started at Hawthorne Elementary where I spent 10 years. After that I decided to give Early Childhood a try and I never looked back. I had found my niche. During my 29 years of service to MMSD, I have spent more than half of my career in Early Childhood traveling out in the community (mostly the LaFollette attendance area) as an Itinerant Speech Clinician. Through all my years at MMSD, I always found myself surrounded by friendly, kind, knowledgeable, and fun staff. I certainly could have not anticipated my last couple of years in MMSD would be spent navigating a global pandemic! I will always be grateful for the strong & steady Speech-Language Leadership, fantastic PSTs, and my Early Childhood colleagues. Although I am excited for the next chapter, I will miss working with young children and their families. I will also miss the camaraderie of the SLP group and Early Childhood staff that I have had the privilege to work with these many years.
