Shifting the Focus to Core Skills

By breaking courses down into specific core skills, SBL moves past traditional point totals to show you exactly what your child has mastered and where they need practice.

In a standards-based learning classroom, every high school course is broken down into specific core skills. Instead of grading students on a single chapter test that mixes dozens of concepts and skills together, the core skills identified for the course allows teachers to track and report on specific areas of student growth.

This approach ensures that your child isn't just memorizing facts to pass a test—they are building a durable toolkit of real-world capabilities like producing clear and coherent writing, applying mathematical processes, constructing a scientific explanation, and communicating an argument.

With standards-based learning, students understand the importance of practice and how that will help improve their learning and proficiency on the core skills.
