Next fall, Madison East, West, La Follette and Memorial high schools are offering the first Personalized Pathway to graduation. Students can apply to be enrolled a pathway at the above high schools now through Jan. 6. The opportunity is open to every incoming ninth grade student.

In a Personalized Pathway, students take core classes (classes like science, social studies and English) in a smaller “learning community” made up of other students in the pathway and a small group of teachers who know each student well and meet regularly, focused on their development.

One of the main features is that core classes revolve around a theme, and Health Services is the theme of the Personalized Pathway open to incoming freshmen next fall. As part of this particular pathway, students will study a rigorous curriculum that helps them attain the skills necessary to graduate ready for college, and they’ll do so through a Health Services theme. Students will choose from a variety of experiences throughout high school that help prepare them for college, career and community. They will take part in hands-on learning and collaborative projects and choose from a variety of experiential learning activities like extracurricular activities, field trips, college visits, guest speakers, service learning and more.

On Monday, hundreds of eighth grade students and family members attended a Pathways Expo at the Alliant Energy Center to learn more about Personalized Pathways. (You can see more pictures from the evening here.) They learned about each high school’s specific Personalized Pathway, got help with their applications, asked questions, participated in activities with other incoming freshmen and visited booths set up by colleges and universities as well as local health science companies.
