Family and Consumer Sciences

Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) empowers individuals to manage the challenges of living and working in a diverse global society. Students develop human literacy as they master a complex set of essential skills and knowledge needed to achieve quality of life. They gain career preparedness as they acquire readiness to participate in a rapidly changing workforce and global economy.

The instructional program includes experiences at the middle and high school level with career majors that provide knowledge/skill development in the following clusters/pathways:

Coursework is rigorous and leads to numerous dual-credit and industry certifications  that provide valuable educational assets to students graduating from MMSD.  Opportunities to develop and apply leadership, social, civic, and business-related skills are provided through Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), the Career-Technical Student Organizations for family and consumer science students; as well as through ProStart, a state and national culinary competition. Integration of the entire program with appropriate academic concepts/courses is strongly encouraged.

FCS Life Skills courses provide skills critical for all students and all ages.
