4K-12 Math Instructional Vision 

This new, comprehensive vision will guide mathematics programming for this academic year and beyond, serving as the foundational framework for decision-making, resource allocation, and expected outcomes across all mathematics priorities.

In MMSD, we provide a coherent 4K–12 mathematics experience that fosters a positive math identity in every student. We are committed to ensuring equitable access and success with rigorous, standards-based instruction that develops competent, confident, and curious math learners.

Shared Learning through Catalyzing Change

During the 24-25 school year, members of the Task Force took part in a variety of activities designed to address the goals of the Task Force.  We framed our work around the recommendations in Catalyzing Change from the National Council of Teacher of Mathematics (NCTM).

Recommendation #1:

Broaden the purpose of mathematics education to cultivate deep understanding, identify, joy, and real-world relevance

  • Prioritize deep, conceptual understanding over memorization or procedural speed.
  • Mathematics will be embedded in meaningful, relevant contexts that reflect students’ lives and communities.
  • We are dedicated to creating classroom experiences that celebrate discovery, creativity, and curiosity.

Recommendation #2:

Create equitable mathematics structures that ensure access, challenge, and opportunity for all students

  • We are committed to providing a unified district-wide vision for mathematics from elementary school through graduation, ensuring all students experience continuity and rigor.
  • Ensure all students access grade-level content

Recommendation #3: 

Implement equitable math practices to build positive identity, agency, and deep engagement

  • We will intentionally design math environments where a positive mathematical identity is built through supportive structures and high expectations for every learner. 
  • Deep learning will be the foundation of our instruction, focusing on the “why” and “how” of mathematics before memorizing procedures.
  • Daily instruction will be structured by the Standards of Mathematical Practice, using them as tools to affirm identity and develop student ownership of the learning. 

4K-12 MMSD Math Course Pathways

MMSD’s pathways represent our commitment to the critical learning of grade level standards necessary to build a strong foundation for high school (and beyond) mathematics. Students are required to complete 3.0 credits of high school math for graduation (Board Policy 3540).

The table below illustrates common pathways that can lead to advanced math coursework in high school. The table shows only some examples of possible high school course pathways and should not be used to replace the course planning that students do with their families and school staff.

For students identified as Advanced Learners, individualized grade-level acceleration may be an option, based on their specific academic needs and in consultation with the Advanced Learning Department.
