Pyramid Model in MMSD 4K classrooms

The Pyramid Model is a way for teachers and families to support children’s social, emotional, and behavioral development. It helps create classrooms and other environments where every child feels safe, cared for, and ready to learn.

Teachers and families can use Pyramid Model practices to build strong, positive relationships and create nurturing, supportive environments. They also teach important social-emotional skills, like making friends, solving problems, and managing feelings. When children need a little extra help, teachers can use special strategies to give them the support they need to be successful.

What does it look like?

The Pyramid Model helps children learn in an environment with clear expectations, visual
schedules, and consistent routines, all designed to help them feel safe, supported, and build strong social and emotional skills.

Positive Descriptive Feedback

When we give children regular, positive, and specific feedback, it helps them understand their behavior and learn new skills. For example, saying, “I notice you are using your walking feet — you’re being so safe!” lets children know exactly what behavior is expected and reminds them they’re following an important classroom rule about staying safe.

We use the Pyramid Model because helping young children build strong social and emotional skills now lays the foundation for their learning, relationships, and success in school and life.

Resources for Families

Families and teachers are partners in supporting children’s growth and learning. We encourage families to stay in regular communication with teachers, sharing what they know about their child and learning about the strategies and routines we use in the classroom. This teamwork helps create consistency between home and school, making it easier for children to feel supported and succeed in both places.
