Henderson Elementary Village Builder, Guadalupe (“Lupe”) Banda, has served Henderson students and families in a number of capacities. He was eager to become a Village Builder when the opportunity arose; he primarily supports 3rd, 4th and 5th grades.
He works to ensure students are receiving the holistic support they need to be successful by collaborating with Student Services staff, the instructional coach, administrators and family liaisons.
One of the keys to Mr. Banda’s impact has been how he builds trust with the students. He noticed students often forget past successes or growth they have made, so he is intentional about celebrating and affirming their capacity, skills and intellect. He and the classroom teacher partner to proactively prepare students for upcoming assessments or special assignments so they are not just mentally prepared for the academic challenge, but emotionally equipped to manage any test-related anxiety.
Mr. Banda has capitalized off each assignment given to him at school, including recess duty. For example, he goes beyond coaching or refereeing a game during recess to utilize lessons from sports to resolve interpersonal conflict so “the team” can continue staying together and having fun with one another.
As any good coach, Mr. Banda does not just see mistakes or growth areas of students – he has a keen eye for the excellence, brilliance and strengths each student brings to every space.
The Henderson Tigers see greatness in their future because their leaders see greatness in them now.
