Over the past three months, UW student athletes have been visiting each 2nd grade classroom across MMSD’s eight Community Schools. They read to students in small groups, emphasizing the importance of literacy and broadening students’ understanding of a variety of topics, such as sports and future careers.
Students are curious. They light up when they interact with the student-athletes, and are even more excited when they learn they get to keep the book they just read. The opportunity to connect with these inspiring role models is one way for students to imagine their futures.
Thanks to UW’s donation of tickets to various athletic events throughout the year, our students, staff and families have enjoyed being front-row fans for the Wisconsin Badgers. Experiences like this help us address -opportunity gaps that exist in our community.
