Student Engagement Specialists: Growing and GLOWing (Girls Leading Our World) Lancers

Student Engagement Specialists’ ‘specialty’ is ensuring schools don’t just inspire minds but also capture the hearts of students. They have focused on developing students’ sense of self, navigating relational conflict, and personal goal setting. 

Tijuana Fountain-Wright is the student engagement specialist (SES) at La Follette High School. Her Lancer step team was so popular last year that the idea spread to other schools. They continue to be featured at numerous Lancer athletic and school-wide events throughout the year. The LHS Drill Team  showcases creativity, teamwork, and excellence. 

Besides training her “majorettes,” Miss T., like all SESs, prioritizes the mentorship of a caseload of students at her assigned schools. Her caseload of a dozen or so students have felt like Miss T. is a mother figure that “gives accountability without judgment.” Nearly all of her caseload from last year have attendance rates at or above 90% this year. Her GLOW (Girls Leading Our World) group engages in regular team activities that teach girls how to trust one another and believe in themselves. 

Leaders like Miss T. are why students at La Follette are growing and GLOWing into their best self and leaders in their school and our community.
