What will mealtimes look like in fall 2021?
All MMSD students will receive free meals for the 2021-22 school year
This school year, all MMSD students will receive free meals under the Summer Seamless Option program (SSO). The USDA has extended the flexibility for school districts to provide free meals to students, and MMSD has elected to participate in this program. All students are eligible for meals at no charge, provided that states continue to make free and reduced-price free and reduced priced meal applications available.
Free and reduced-price meal applications
Under the Seamless Summer Option Program, schools will continue to collect and process household applications for free and reduced-price school meals. The School Food Authority (SFA) must make the USDA Free and Reduced-Price Meal application available to households, as usual, to certify children for free and reduced-price meal eligibility status.
A student's free and reduced-price meal eligibility is not required for free school meals through SSO, but it establishes eligibility for other benefits, such as state reporting, Wisconsin School Day Milk Program, and P-EBT. SFAs that collected household applications prior to October 1, 2021, are required to conduct verification, as usual.
Applications are available online: Free & Reduced Price Meal Application. If your household has special circumstances, such as Foster, Homeless, or other student's eligibility questions, please call (608) 204-4003.
Free and Reduced-Price – Negative Meal Account Balances
Although MMSD students are receiving Free meals this year under the SSO program, parents are still required to maintain any negative balances on their Free and Reduced-Price Meal accounts. Food Service will be monitoring student account balances going forward with our POS vendor making sure Free and Reduced meal accounts are compliant.
