Join us in celebrating Black History Month

Throughout the month of February, we’ll introduce you to Black students, staff and community members who are writing history every day. We’ll also give you a front row seat to a few of the events, celebrations and activities that will be occurring at schools across our district. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram to see these amazing stories.

Schools across the district prepare for Read Your Heart Out Day

This month, many of our schools are taking part in Read Your Heart Out Day, also known as National African American Parent Involvement Day (February 12). NAAPID is a day for families to join their children at school and get an inside look at what their day is like. Family members, community members and students will serve as readers.

Changes to 2018  MMSD Summer School program

Summer will be here before we know it and we want to make sure you know about some adjustments to the 2018 MMSD Summer School program. These changes are essential for helping us better serve our students who most need the extra academic boost summer school provides.

Students referred to summer school for academic support (and their siblings in grades 4K-4), will have the opportunity to enroll first – beginning Wednesday, March 21, at 9:00 a.m. On Monday April 9, beginning at 9:00 a.m., all families of elementary school students (grades 4K-4) will have the opportunity to enroll in the enrichment courses offered in summer school. Our Middle School summer programming offers academic courses only. All students must meet learner behavior criteria, be enrolled in the regular curriculum, and be able to participate in the classroom independently. Space is limited.

For families in need of additional summer enrichment opportunities, please check out Madison School and Community Recreation’s (MSCR) Summer Program Guide when it becomes available in the Wisconsin State Journal on March 11. You can also visit the Madison-area Out of School Time (MOST) website, mostmadison.org, for additional summer opportunities.

Three schools selected for Disney Musical in Schools program

Three Madison schools have been selected to participate in Overture Center’s 2017-18 Disney Musicals in Schools program. Congratulations to Frank Allis Elementary, Nuestro Mundo Community School and Leopold Elementary School. Leopold and Frank Allis both selected The Lion King and Nuestro Mundo chose The Jungle Book.

Last year, four of our schools participated in the first year of the program, with 164 students and 25 teachers working together to create a culture of musical theater at their schools. Those four schools—Falk, Glendale, Hawthorne and Mendota Elementary Schools—continue to produce musicals.

Learn more about Disney Musicals in Schools at Overture Center's website.

Help us celebrate I Love My Public School Week

I Love My Public School Week is February 12-16. This week is a statewide effort focused on support and appreciation for public schools. You can share your appreciation by sending valentines to your child's teacher and school staff or by simply posting on social media using the hashtag #ILoveMyPublicSchool. Check out the events from the Wisconsin Public Education Network happening next week.
