MMSD is excited to offer a FREE ACT preparation class for students in grades 9-12. The ACT is a standardized test commonly used in the college admissions process. This prep course, however, stretches beyond preparing for a college admissions test.

Through this preparatory experience students will have the opportunity to:

  • Strategies and motivation
  • Preview the ACT standardized test experience
  • Improve overall study skills that can be applied to various coursework
  • Extend vocabulary
  • Increase comprehension of difficult passages
  • Students can receive .25 elective credit

In fact, a higher ACT score is only one of the many benefits to participating in this FREE opportunity.

When is the class held?

  • Duration - Week of December 5, 2022 - Week of February  27, 2023 

  • Students may select a virtual or in person course

  • Courses will be offered at the following high schools:

    • East - Wednesdays 4 - 6 p.m.

    • West - Wednesdays 4 - 6 p.m.

    • La Follette - Tuesdays 4 - 6 p.m.

    • Memorial - Thursdays 4 - 6 p.m.

  • Students attending an alternative high school &/or program may attend at their home/zone school or choose the virtual option

  • Virtual courses will be offered:

    • Mondays - 4 - 6 p.m.

    • Thursdays - 6 - 8 p.m.

Who is this course for?

  • Rising 10th through 12th graders

  • All students, with a special focus on students who have a financial need and those historically excluded

  • Any student who would like to challenge themselves academically and feel more prepared for the ACT

When is the ACT offered?

(Remember - you can take the ACT as many times as you want and be in any grade to take it. Fee waivers are available for students who qualify - see your counselor for details.)

ACCOMMODATIONS FOR DISABILITIES

Students who have documented disabilities are offered appropriate accommodations during the tests.

SUPPORT FOR ENGLISH LEARNERS

Assistance is offered to support students who are English learners. These supports may include extended time on the test, an approved word-to-word bilingual dictionary, receiving test directions in their native language, and testing in a comfortable and familiar environment.

Be ACT ready, study with a buddy

When it comes to studying, two (or more) brains are always better than one. 

Having a friend, tutor, teacher or parent help out will both help you get more information and reduce your workload. Having homework might seem like a lot sometimes, but it helps you focus on improving without making you do more work in areas where you may not need it.

Be ACT ready Calculator tips

  • Review the latest information on permitted and prohibited calculators.

  • You are not required to use a calculator. All the problems can be solved without a calculator.

If you regularly use a calculator in your mathematics work, use one you're familiar with when you take the mathematics test. Using a more powerful, but unfamiliar, calculator is not likely to give you an advantage over using the kind you normally use.
