Risk Management

MMSD is committed to enriching the education of our youth while maintaining safe practices throughout our district.  Each student, staff and community member play an essential part in creating an educational environment that is inclusive and welcoming to all.

Risk Management aims at increasing awareness of potential risks that may inhibit our educational foundations and environment.  The focus of risk management is to create safety protocols and regulations that are beneficial to the dynamic impacts that affect our educational environment so that each student may reach their full potential throughout their educational experience at MMSD.

Risk Management is embedded in all aspects of the school district.  By collaborating with other MMSD departments, unified protocols are established, providing safety guidance for students, staff, and community members.

Essential Risk Management Techniques

Risk Avoidance

Risk Avoidance which can be considered the ultimate method for loss control is the process of eliminating the possibility of a risk occurring by taking precautions by avoiding investments that may place the district in harm. Essentially avoidance is a method for mitigating risk by not participating in activities that could negatively impact an individual or the district.

Loss Reduction

Loss Reduction is taking precautionary measures to reduce the likelihood or severity of a loss. Even though sometimes risk may be inevitable due to hazards such as severe weather that may result in damage, Risk Management works with other district departments in order to minimize the frequency and severity of risks by providing education and guidance on safety.

Retention

In Risk Retention the district is taking on all risks and associated losses, rather than transferring them to a third party because based on the frequency and severity of a risk the retention of the risk may be more cost effective. For example, certain losses to district property such as wear and tear are expected to occur over time. When losses occur, the cost of repairs is absorbed by the district, except for those situations when we can collect from a negligent third party.

Transfer

In Risk Transfer the district is essentially transferring risk to another party for a fee, such as transferring the risk of damage to school property to an insurance company.

The district also transfers risks by requiring a certificate of insurance by any outside vendor that utilizes district property so that the district can recover any losses that may occur.
