School Based Health Centers (SBHC) provide comprehensive medical and behavioral health care directly in MMSD high schools, so all students have the opportunity to learn and grow. SBHCs are a powerful tool for achieving wellness and health equity among students who unjustly experience disparities in outcomes simply because of their race, ethnicity, or family income.
MMSD SBHCs are based on a culturally responsive, trauma-informed, data-driven, collaborative, and family-based approach.
High school students will be able to access behavioral health services through a referral process utilizing the student services team. The behavioral health program integrates a full-time, behavioral health therapist into each high school through our community partner, UW Behavioral Health Youth and Family, who actively collaborates with the school teams. With student and parent/guardian consent, the therapist provides individual therapy to students who are unable to access community-based mental health care. The SBHC therapist improves the school’s capacity for addressing mental health concerns through direct service, consultation, teaming, and collaboration.
