MSCR received a National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Commit To Health Grant for $20,000. The grant funded cafeteria upgrades, which promote healthy eating at five elementary schools, and the purchase of twelve breakfast/snack serving carts. The grant also allowed MSCR to hire two dietetics interns who provided nutrition education at eight MSCR Summer Recreation & Enrichment Centers (SREC). The children loved working with the interns and fun games like Food Group Jeopardy, Strawberry Toss Relay and Fruit and Vegetable Bingo. The activities also got children to get up and move – these included “Red Light Green Light” using the theme “Stop, Slow and Go” Drinks.

This fall, MSCR will continue the nutrition education at eight afterschool sites and provide a cooking workshop at the MSCR Meadowood Neighborhood Center. This is the fourth NRPA grant MSCR has written and secured raising more than $75,000 for the Madison Metropolitan School District. See more information on NRPA Grants.
