Madison School District Presents Plans to Close Achievement Gaps

District Asks for Community Input on Initial Plan

Superintendent Dan Nerad presented the Madison School District’s plan to build the future of the District and close the achievement gaps for low-income and minority students at a special meeting of the Board of Education on Monday.

“Today I present a call to action to our staff, our families, and our community as we move into this next phase of our transformation,” Superintendent Dan Nerad said. “Madison is a city with the opportunities and supports that put young people firmly on the path to educational and professional success. We are known for our National Merit Finalists, our high numbers of perfect ACT and SAT scores and our Advanced Placement participation. But, that is not the experience of all of our students. We are also known for our unacceptable racial disparities in our public schools.

“These untenable disparities have institutional and community roots in our district. We know this. We’re listening. And together with our community, we intend to change it.”

The District will provide opportunities for community input over the next two months, and will use that input to revise and refine the plan. More information and a full calendar of community input sessions is listed below.

“This initial plan is the first step in our journey together. Join us in fleshing out this framework and improving this plan,” Nerad said. “We know we have a lot of work ahead of us, and I hope the community will join us in this process.”
