Discover U, a leadership group of young women from La Follette High School, worked with the Junior League of Madison, the Advanced Learning Department, and Health Services to make their vision of access to sanitary products with dignity a reality. This group developed a plan for students to be able to replace emergency tampons with dignity so that more time can be spent in class instead of making trips to the nurses office for sanitary products. Junior League donated $2,000 worth of tampons to MMSD as a result of this leadership project started by the Advanced Learning Department.
On Wednesday, April 26th, these donations will be handed out to students at La Follette during the lunch hour. Free tampons will be dispensed in the spectators gym while a video made by this group will play to explain the goal of the project to fellow classmates. Each tampon is labeled with a sticker that reminds young women to replace their free tampon with another free tampon available in the nurses office. Students and the Nurses office created a display of tampons so that students can care for themselves with dignity and pride. This collaborative effort is a testimony to the spirit of forward thinking in our Madison schools and community.
