Thoreau teacher Marta Sells will be recognized Saturday, Oct. 24 by the Wisconsin Association For Environmental Education as the Formal Educator of the Year. This statewide organization works to support environmental educators across Wisconsin and recognizes individuals and groups who demonstrate outstanding efforts in the field. Marta has been a classroom teacher for more than 20 years.
She is being recognized by the Association because through all these years she has dedicated her mission and to infusing environmental education into her daily classroom pursuits. She provides (and leads by) simple examples of how students can be responsible citizens and live sustainably. She helped establish a vegetable garden, two rain gardens, a butterfly garden and an Outdoor Classroom on the Thoreau grounds. She founded and helps to run an all-school "Environmental Options Day" each spring at Thoreau, and she encourages children, staff and parents to get involved in caring for the earth and teaching students the joy of doing so.
MMSD Staff and community members are encouraged to attend the Award Ceremony at the Monona Terrace at 6pm on Saturday, Oct. 24. Ticket information is available at waee.org.
