Office of Youth Re-Engagement

The Office of Youth Re-Engagement seeks to develop responsive strategies, systems, and programs that provide youth and families access to quality education. We focus attention on the goal of impacting large scale change within high schools through using a restorative justice approach to education across learning experiences of innovative design. Through continued partnerships with community stakeholders, we seek to develop a homeplace for families to access alternative education pathways to high school completion and toward a thriving future. Our intentional supports and programs build a connective process for students transitioning into a secondary level school or program; and engages students and families who are disengaging from MMSD educational programs.

Our department seeks to:

Defy deficit-based notions reflected in personal biases.

Disrupt Engrained approaches and strategies that do not engage and promote growth and learning of all students.

Dismantle structures, policies and procedures that uphold the status quo.

Information about our Alternative Pathways

Alternative pathways refers to changing the academic setting of youth. We recognize that heavily populated comprehensive school buildings may not be the ideal learning environment for many of our learners. Like our students, alternative pathways seek to develop smaller settings to provide valuable individualized supports, both academic and personal.

Alternative completion programs offer secondary school-aged youth options to achieve a high school diploma, high school equivalency diploma (HSED) or general education development certificate.  To learn more about our Alternative Completion Programs, please click here.
