As we prepare for virtual learning for the start of school, it is my hope that the following updates will assist you as you are planning to support your students and interact with teachers.
Google Access (4k-12):
At Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), we use G Suite for Education tools that include Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Classroom, and more. At MMSD, students will use their G Suite accounts to complete assignments, communicate with their teachers, sign in to their Chromebooks, and learn 21st-century digital citizenship skills. During this time of virtual learning, all students will need access to Google and this means that all students will need a district-issued email. Please know that we are working to ensure that all students will have access to Google prior to the start of school.
The following page, G Suite for Education Notice to Parents and Guardians, provides answers to common questions about what Google can and can’t do with your child’s personal information in accordance with Federal student privacy laws, as well as the protections Google takes to protect student data privacy.
Please know that this process can be updated once school has returned to an all face to face instructional environment.
When teachers and families work together, outcomes improve. We’re using Seesaw because it supports strong relationships between teachers, students, and families. Together, we can support and celebrate your child’s learning inside and outside the classroom! This school year all elementary schools, grades 4k-5, will utilize Seesaw as the primary mode for students completing assignments and for communication with families.

Please know that as the school year starts, schools will provide additional information on how families will get connect with Seesaw.
All teachers will use Google Classroom to support student learning this academic year. Google Classroom has a built-in “progress report” feature that will email parents a daily or weekly summary of their students' work. Parents are able to decide the frequency of these summaries, additional information provided below. Please know that due to these reports being automated, we are unable to make any changes or customize the actual report.
Once the invite has been accepted, families will receive regular, automatic email summaries for each of their students. Guardians choose the frequency of the emails—daily or weekly—and can unsubscribe at any time. The summaries will include:
Missing work—Work that’s late at the time the email was sent
Upcoming work—Work that’s due today and tomorrow (for daily emails) or work that’s due in the upcoming week (for weekly emails)
Class activity—Announcements, assignments, and questions recently posted by teachers.
Please know that after you have subscribed to the summaries, if you fail to receive a summary it is because one of the four reasons:
There's no activity to report for the given time period.
All of your student’s teachers turned off notifications for their classes.
Families accepted the invitation but chose not to get any summaries.
Families aren't connected to any student in Classroom
Upon clicking "Accept Invitation," you will be directed to a page that will allow you to adjust your email summary settings. You may choose to receive daily or weekly summaries of your student's assignments and activity in Google Classroom (across all subjects!), and may choose to stop receiving the summaries at any time.
Please note: To manage your email summaries, you will need to set up a free Google Account. You do not need a Gmail address to accomplish this; just use your preferred email to set up a free Google Account if you do not already have one.
Please know that we will send families the formal invitation from the following MMSD email account, "Gsuite Admin" firstname.lastname@example.org, to the primary email address located in IC, on September 9, 2020.
At this time, it is my hope that families that have requested a hotspot via their school librarian or the family helpline have either received the hotspot or communication that your hotspot is on the way. In order to support families with hotspots, each hotspot has 7500 MB of data. We are using the summer usage for families to determine the appropriate amount of data that we have assigned for each device. If a family has 3 or more children in the household, two devices will be provided to support the number of children. The following information will be provided in each unit.
Please know that if your student is still in need of their password those will be provided by the classroom teacher at the elementary level. At the middle and high school levels please contact your building Library Media Technology Specialist to reset a student password.
6th graders will have their password from 5th grade if they are returning. New 6th graders will have a password of lowercase x followed birthday month, day, year in two digits, and a capital X (xmmddyyX) and be prompted to reset the password upon initially logging in. 7-12 grades have previously been set to xmmddyyX and have been encouraged to change this to something more secure (See Google’s requirements for creating a strong password).
Please know that during the 3rd week of school all secondary students will be encouraged to reset their passwords and the LMTSs will work with students and staff to help with this process.
