Close reading doesn’t just help kids become better readers. It also helps them become better communicators—listeners, speakers and writers.

That’s because close reading is intimately connected to communicating. When students use close reading to thoroughly understand a text—whether a chapter book, an Earth Science text or a lesson on multiplication—they’re better prepared to discuss and write about these things!

Close readers can cite evidence from text and practice using grade-appropriate academic language.

Here are some sentence starters to help your child cite evidence from a text:

The author states…
According to the text…
On page __, it said…
From the reading, I know that…
I partly disagree because…
This is similar to…
Despite _____, I want to argue that _____.
While it may be true that _____, another point to consider is that _____.
