Revising the IEP

Although the IDEA requires the IEP to be written at least once a year, the team may review and revise the IEP more often. Either the parents or the school can ask at any time to hold an IEP meeting to revise the child's IEP. IDEA 2004 allows sections of an existing IEP program to be changed without convening an IEP meeting. The parent/legal guardian/adult student and LEA must agree to this arrangement prior to the change.

Revisions to the IEP may occur with a meeting or without a meeting:

An invitation, cover sheet, and new placement form (with new placement date) must be completed. The IEP team meets to discuss changes to the IEP. A meeting is required for changes to placement or levels of service.
In MMSD, a revision without a meeting may be done on existing sections of the IEP program.  Staff may contact the parent/guardian to discuss the changes to an existing part of the IEP, and if the parent agrees, document the communication on the I-10AB Notice of Changes to an IEP without a meeting, make the changes, and send the parent the newly revised IEP
