MMSD is excited to announce the advancement of our partnership with the Welcoming Schools Program, a division of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC). This summer we added a full-time Welcoming Schools Lead position and Welcoming Schools National Staff provided a 4-day District-Wide Facilitator Training. Seventeen MMSD staff, along with two GSAFE representatives, extended their knowledge and skills around creating inclusive school environments. Facilitators will provide ongoing professional development at our 16 Partner Schools.
Schools will focus on topics such as family diversity, gender-inclusive schools, preventing bias-based bullying and supporting transgender and non-binary students. This training will improve teachers’ capacity to talk about, teach, and address important, but often difficult topics, creating more welcoming school environments where all students will feel a sense a belonging. Our goal is to create schools where students are able to be their true selves, allowing them to focus on their learning and thrive academically.
