Dr Matthew GutierrezOn January 24, 2020, the Board of Education announced the selection of Dr. Matthew Gutiérrez as the next Superintendent of Madison Metropolitan School District.

Dr. Gutiérrez comes to MMSD with an excellent track record of being a collaborative leader with a devotion to academic success for all students.

Community input helped guide board’s decision

Although it is the Board who makes the final selection, their search was guided by an unprecedented level of community input. This input helped shape the leadership profile that served as the board’s guide. “The level of community involvement in this process is something to be very proud of,” said Board President Gloria Reyes. A champion for every single student

During a public session in Madison (video below), Gutiérrez said he would be “a champion for every single student and a uniter who will bring the community together toward a common purpose – that being to serve students.”

Strong commitment to Strategic Framework, Black Excellence

Gutiérrez expressed a strong commitment to our Strategic Framework, including our key goal of African American children and youth excelling. “What that means,” he said during the public forum, “is that every educator in Madison is a champion for our black students.”

Background

Dr. Gutiérrez is currently the Superintendent of the Seguin Independent School District in Seguin, Texas. He previously served as deputy superintendent with the Plano Independent School district with 54,000 students and before that as an interim superintendent and human resources director in the Little Elm Independent School District.

He began his career in education as a middle school English Language Arts teacher, and also served as an elementary school principal and middle school assistant principal. Dr. Gutiérrez earned a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Texas Tech University.

Dr. Gutiérrez will finish out the school year in his current role and will begin his tenure with MMSD on June 1, 2020. He plans to visit MMSD to formally meet staff, the school board and the community before the end of the school year.
