Family, Youth and Community Engagement (FYCE)

The Office of Family, Youth, and Community Engagement will serve as the central hub for cultivating these vital relationships within MMSD. Our work is guided by a clear, equity-focused approach.

We lead using a targeted universalism framework in conjunction with a dual capacity-building framework. This means we focus on supporting all students and families while intentionally centering the needs of our most historically marginalized and underserved family and student groups. By doing so, we aim to ensure that our strategies are effective for everyone with a particular emphasis on those who have faced systemic barriers.

Our office will champion the continuum of involvement, engagement, and collaboration strategies.

We work to serve students, families/care-givers and community groups, as well as school and district staff. Our key bodies of work include creating, supporting and leading the following:

  • Annual Read Your Heart Out
  • Family Empowerment Groups
  • Youth mentorship
  • HBCU and HSI experiences
  • Multicultural student and/or family groups
  • Heritage Month Celebrations

Key Pillars

The FYCE strategy is centered on two key pillars: Family Engagement and Community Engagement. Both pillars are vital in fostering student success and creating a thriving school environment.

Family Engagement

Family Engagement is all about creating an active, meaningful, and ongoing partnership between families and MMSD schools. We believe that families are essential partners in their child’s education, contributing unique strengths, invaluable knowledge, and rich cultural backgrounds.

This partnership is designed to support and improve every aspect of a child’s learning, development, and overall well-being. It’s about working together to ensure students have the support they need to succeed both academically and personally.

Community Engagement

Community Engagement is about collaborating with community groups and individuals. These can be neighbors affiliated by geographic proximity or groups united by shared special interest. Our aim is to address issues that impact the well-being of MMSD families. This includes building partnerships with a wide array of local resources including but not limited to:

  • Businesses
  • Non-profit Organizations
  • Government Agencies
  • Cultural Groups
  • Community Leaders
