On November 3, Madison voters approved an operating referendum and facilities referendum. Referenda 2020 will lift Madison up as a thriving, equitable, and inclusive community for generations to come. We thank our community, for their faith and resolve, even during these challenging times, to entrust us with a tremendous responsibility: make good on their investment in our schools and our children; and provide our students the best possible opportunity to be career, college and community ready.
The passing of the operational referendum will help us place and maintain highly qualified diverse educators in our classrooms. It will allow us to continue and grow strategic equity projects aimed at disrupting societal and historical inequities and narrowing disparities that fall along racial and socioeconomic lines, projects like our full-day 4-year-old kindergarten pilot, Early College STEM Academy, Black Excellence, a new historically accurate, inclusive and culturally relevant, phonics-based reading curriculum for the 2021-2022 school year, and more.
The passing of the facilities referendum will allow us to provide buildings that reflect our rich history and our commitment to our future leaders. We will be able to make significant updates to the learning environments in Madison’s four main high schools, benefitting MMSD students in every attendance area. Capital High will move from two temporary locations into their own building at Hoyt School and we will build a new elementary school in the Rimrock area to give underserved students and families a much-needed school in their neighborhood.
Our goal all along has been to listen to the community, respond to your input, and encourage people to participate in the process. As we move through the implementation of the referenda we will continue to listen and provide opportunities for feedback. Thank you for your engagement in each step of the process. We are so proud to be a part of a community that believes in the value of providing an innovative, equity-driven educational experience for our students in well-maintained facilities. #MMSDfamily
