TEACH Madison

The teacher screening and selection process is a multi-phased approach during which candidates will demonstrate whether they have the skills, abilities, and talents that Madison Teachers need to be successful. The competencies that MMSD will use to screen and select candidates are based on expectations created through teacher and principal feedback, the Great Teaching project, and thoughts from our Superintendent:

• High Expectations for Every Student: Teachers should demonstrate through actions and words that every student can achieve high standards. Teachers should share a commitment to excellence and equity for all students. Teachers should hold a clear mission and values orientation aligned with Madison's vision.
• Quality Instructional Practice: Teachers should plan and execute rigorous, engaging units and lessons, including meaningful in-class and out-of-class assignments, and ensure student mastery of content. Teachers should provide necessary scaffolds, interventions, and extensions to meet a range of learning needs.
• Cultural Competence: Teachers should understand and articulate the systems and beliefs that may lead to inequitable outcomes for students of color as well as adapt instruction to meet the needs of each student. Teachers should make links between content and student experiences, perspectives, and personal goals.
• Data Proficiency: Teachers should use data beyond standardized assessments to diagnose student learning needs and differentiate instruction in the classroom. 
• Team Collaboration: Teachers should collaborate with peers to reflect on student achievement and teacher practice data to continuously plan and improve instruction.
• Student & Family Engagement: Teachers should take initiative to build relationships with students. Teachers should understand unique family characteristics and find ways to engage all families as full partners in their children's education.
• Resilience & Results Orientation: Teachers should find challenges exciting and persist in the face of challenges.
• Self-Awareness & Growth Mindset: Teachers should reflect on strengths and growth areas regularly as well as seek mentors to improve.

By reviewing teacher applicants against these expectations in various ways, the district will be able to identify candidates with proven experience and aptitude in the skills that matter most for teachers in Madison. The process begins with submission of an application, an interview, and a reference check for specific vacancies.

1. Application Review
   • Review for licensure, relevant experience and demonstration of competencies.
2. Interview
   • Interview with the hiring authority that may include data assessment and other performance tasks
3. Reference Check
   • A reference check will be completed with the contact information provided in the application
4. Offer Letter
   • Upon selection, you would receive an offer from HR outlining position, pay, and next steps
5. Onboarding
   • You will receive a link for onboarding, including HR paperwork and a welcome email (you will not be able to start until onboarding is complete)
6. Benefits
   • Enroll in benefits within 30 days of your state date

An HR Analyst will email you letting you know that you’ve been referred for a vacancy. The next contact may come from a principal or hiring authority to set up an interview. You will be notified once the position is filled.

Yes. We encourage you to apply early. As long as you are enrolled in a teacher certification program, we will proceed assuming that you will be issued a license. For December graduates, the current school year opportunites are available for applications. If you are interested in the  next school year positions, you can apply to our pool postings in December while you await our position-specific vacancies which will be posted in April. For May graduates, you may apply in April assuming you will be graduating by August prior to starting the school year.

MMSD does not issue licenses. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction issues teaching licenses, and can answer your questions. Visit https://dpi.wi.gov/licensing/apply-educator-license/one-year-stip for more information on licensing.

Please be sure your application is complete; it allows us to best assess your qualifications for a position.

Although we prefer official transcripts to be submitted at the time of application, it is not required. You can upload an unofficial transcript at the time of application; however, if you are recommended for hire, you will need to submit final transcripts to determine salary placement in order to be extended an official offer.

Resumes are required, as this information is used to fully assess your application for qualifications. We do not require letters of reference as part of your application, but we do require contact information for three references. Our Board of Education policy states that we must check at least two references prior to making an offer of employment. Those references will be checked by the District, and letters of recommendation are not accepted in lieu of our outreach.
